The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
